All About Mice

Do you hate mice? You’re not alone. Nobody likes to have critters running around in the kitchen, the pantry… or the bedroom. Yikes! And of all the critters that can get into your home, mice are one of the worst to have around. Let’s take a moment to explore some things you may not know about mice.

There Is Nothing Cute About a Wild Mouse

If you think mice are disgusting, you’re right. They are! Mice are very unclean creatures that climb around in dumpsters and trash cans. They also leave their waste in the areas they sleep. You definitely don’t want these critters in your pantry or food cabinets. They can carry diseases and contaminate your food.

How Do Mice Get In?

A mouse can gain access to your home through a hole the size of a dime. This is because they can compact their internal organs as they squeeze through. You’ll have to look closely to find holes that mice are using to get into your home. Some common entry points are:

  • Gaps in weatherstripping
  • Damaged door sweeps
  • Holes in window and door frames
  • Gaps around window and door frames
  • Damaged screens
  • Holes around pipes or wire conduit
  • Holes in the soleplate of a home
  • Vents

Mice and Ticks Go Together Like Peas and Carrots

Ticks are becoming more of a concern for folks in Middle Tennessee. You may not realize this but a single mouse can have as many as a hundred seed ticks on its body. When those seed ticks develop, they drop off and begin to explore your house for another host. While they don’t take humans as hosts, they can attach and get a blood meal. They can present another disease threat.

Warning Signs

Are you wondering if you have mice inside your home? There are a few ways you can tell.

  • One of the easiest ways to find out whether or not you have a mice infestation is to look for droppings. You can quickly check in the cabinet under your kitchen sink or take a little more time to go up into your attic and check that area real quick. If you find droppings, look to see if they are dark and moist. This is an indication that you have a current and active infestation. Mouse droppings are usually about the size of a grain of rice. That is pretty small, but they’ll leave lots of droppings around for you to find.
  • If you go into your attic to check for droppings, you may also look for small, matted down nests. These will be made from soft material taken from your home, such as insulation, wallpaper, cardboard shreds, cotton from clothing or the stuffing from furniture. If you have furniture stored in your attic, they may nest inside. This can ruin your furniture.
  • Mice soak areas of infestation with their urine. The smell of mice urine can be quite strong. If you have a large infestation, you’ll know it as soon as you poke your nose up into your attic.
  • Sometimes you can hear mice. The time to listen for them is at night because they are nocturnal. If you listen closely, you may hear them bumping around. You may also hear them chewing and gnawing. Mice are rodents and rodents have to continually file down their teeth because their teeth never stop growing. Mice chew on many things, including wiring. This makes them a fire hazard.
  • Mice leave greasy rub marks on baseboards as they run along walls.
  • Gnaw marks and holes in baseboards, sheetrock, and food packaging can let you know you have an infestation.
