Most Dangerous Lebanon, Tennessee Pests

When you think of dangerous creatures in Tennessee, what comes to mind? Do you think of spiders? Certainly, brown recluse spiders would be on your list. Do you think of ticks? As Lyme disease spreads across the country, this is certainly a pest to be concerned about. But some of the most dangerous pests in Tennessee are often not thought of as dangerous. Perhaps it is because these pests come with cute little ears, cute little whiskers, and coats of fur. Can you guess which critters we’re referring to? Yup. Rodents. As we head into fall pest season, now is an important time to take a look at three overwintering pests which are considered to be the most dangerous pests in Tennessee. Let’s start with those “cute” little rodents.

Rodents

There are many animals that are classified as rodents but the two rodents we see inside our homes most are mice and rats. This has led many to use the term rodent interchangeably with mouse or rat. If these two rodents were just cute little furry animals, that wouldn’t be too much of a problem, but mice and rats spread harmful bacteria, pathogens, and parasitic worms. When they get into stored foods or explore sensitive areas such as silverware drawers, cabinets, and pantries, they contaminate them with the dangerous organisms in their fur and by exposing them to their feces and urine. They damage our homes, our furniture, and our stored items as they chew. Worse, all of that chewing can cause a live wire to be severed and a house fire to break out. And like all this isn’t bad enough, they bring ticks, fleas, mites and other parasites in with them, which come with their own set of problems.

Ticks

There are many species of ticks and they each come with their own set of disease threats. Lyme is just one of many dangerous diseases spread by ticks. A few of the most notable tick-borne diseases are southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI), Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), ehrlichiosis, and tularemia.

Brown Recluse Spiders

In Tennessee, we have two types of dangerous spiders to watch out for: black widow spiders and brown recluse spiders. Of the two, brown recluse spiders can be a serious threat because these spiders can live and reproduce inside our homes. When they reproduce, they can grow their population quickly. While these spiders are reclusive and don’t prefer to bite, they can and do bite, especially as more spiders hatch. And, as you are likely aware, a brown recluse bite can have necrotic properties.
