Why Nashville Homeowners Choose All-American's Perimeter PLUS Pest Control Program

It’s hard keeping pests out of our homes. That’s because pests have many ways they can get into a home. They squeeze through cracks in our foundation walls, gaps in our door frames, holes in our screens, openings in our weather stripping, worn spots in our door sweeps, holes created by other bugs, and more. That is why homeowners invest in pest control services. To meet this need, the experts at All-American Pest Control developed Perimeter PLUS.

Before pests get into a home, many of them will explore the perimeter. They tunnel in the soil. They’ll climb around in the bushes. They’ll hide under leaves to shield themselves from the sun. And they’ll congregate on walls, steps, sills, and more. When they do, it is the perfect opportunity to eliminate them. The perimeter application that our service professionals apply to foundation walls, window sills we can reach, the openings of pipes, doorways (especially garage doors), splash blocks, garbage cans, and more, work to take down unwanted pests before they accidentally get in.

Perimeter PLUS also comes with a misting application that is applied around the home and in vegetation, under decks, and in tree canopies close to the home. When silverfish, centipedes, millipedes and other bugs come to explore your perimeter, they’re in trouble. When mosquitoes use these areas as a resting spot in the middle of the day, they are eliminated. Perimeter PLUS effectively works to control over 47 common Tennessee pests.

If you invest in Perimeter PLUS, you can expect a knowledgeable and friendly service professional to arrive at your home in a uniform. You can expect your service professional to do three passes. The first is a detailed inspection of entry points and vulnerabilities and a removal of spider webs that can be reached. The second pass is a perimeter application that addresses crawling pests. The third is a misting application that is designed to get mosquitoes.

No pest control barrier is perfect. Pests can still get in. They can fly through an open door, hitchhike in, or find some other way. It is also possible for weather to break materials down quicker than expected. If this happens, don’t worry. Just give us a call and we’ll treat the inside of your home for no additional charge.

For more information about Perimeter PLUS, or to schedule a visit, reach out to us. We look forward to helping you keep pests out of your Nashville home.

What is a Roof Rat, and How Did It Get Inside My Brentwood Home?

This rat has a long history of living with people, and it goes by many names. You may have heard it called a black rat, ship rat, or house rat. Its scientific name is rattus rattus. And, of the two types of commensal rodents we see most, this rat is the smallest. An adult roof rat measures between 6 to 8 inches in length, with a tail that adds another 7 to 10 inches. Its larger cousin, the Norway rat, is 7 to 9 ½ inches long with a tail that is 6 to 8 inches in length. Both of these rats love to live in human dwellings but they behave slightly differently.

Roof rats, as their name implies, prefer to be in high places. They’re great climbers and are quick to set up a home in rafters. If you have these rats in your Brentwood home, it is likely they accessed it from a location on your roof. But they don’t always do this. If they find a gap, crack, or hole in your foundation or exterior walls, they will exploit it. It is possible that this is how they got in.

When keeping roof rats out of a home, it is important to address vulnerabilities both high and low. Fill in holes and cover vents, windows, and doors with screen. It is also important to cut off access routes. Trim branches away from the roofline and put wire mesh in downspouts to prevent these rats from climbing up.

If rats have already gotten into your home, the best solution is to call a professional. Here are a few reasons why:

  • Rats are hard to get rid of. They have been living with people since the dawn of time. They’re good at it. One of the characteristics that have helped them succeed at this is a behavior trait that makes them extremely suspicious of new things. If you lay a trap down in an area a rat has been, it is likely to avoid it.
  • Rats reproduce quickly. Have you heard the term breeding like rabbits? Well, rabbits don’t have anything on rats.
  • Rats spread diseases and harmful bacteria.
  • Rats are directly linked to the spread of ticks, fleas, and other parasites. These parasites come with their own lists of diseases.

If you live in Hendersonville, and you’re struggling with a rat problem, let the friendly and experienced service professionals at All-American Pest Control help you solve that pest problem. Go here to schedule an appointment with one of our service team members.

Beware These Fall Pests in Hendersonville

Fall is beautiful in Hendersonville, but as the temperatures drop, we start to see insects crawling on our outside walls. If the conditions are right, this can turn into a winter infestation.

A few of our common overwintering pests are stink bugs, Asian lady beetles, and boxelder bugs. But none of these insects can live in our homes permanently. Our homes don’t contain the food these insects prefer. Stink bugs are a crop pest that would much rather be feeding in a field of grains or vegetables. Asian lady beetles prefer these as well but they dine on aphids and scale insects. Boxelder bugs eat seeds and newly developing leaves on trees, particularly boxelder trees. Since your home doesn’t have an abundance of grains and vegetables lying around, or aphids, scale insects, seeds, and leaves, there is a good chance these insects won’t want to stay. But that doesn’t mean they won’t pester you for a while.

When these bugs get in, they can be a real nuisance. They may also stain curtains, furniture, clothing, and other fabrics. Worst of all, they can stink. Stink bugs and boxelder bugs both have the ability to produce a strong, disagreeable odor. Definitely not house guests any of us need this winter.

How do you keep overwintering pests out of your Hendersonville home? It begins with exclusion.

  • Check all your screens and make sure they are in good working order.
  • Inspect weather stripping on sliding glass doors. If there is any damage to the bristles, consider replacing them.
  • Inspect your door sweeps and see that they make good contact all the way across.
  • Examine your foundation walls for any cracks or chipped mortar. Use a repair kit to seal things up.
  • Examine your exterior walls for holes or gaps. Repair any you find. If you’re not able to make repairs, consider using a caulking gun to fill them in for now.
  • Check all your door frames for gaps or holes. It doesn’t take much of a hole to allow one of these insects in so look closely. Repair any holes you find.

Once you have your walls and foundation sealed as much as possible, you may be done. But overwintering pests are surprisingly good at finding tiny holes we miss. For the best protection possible, contact a pest professional and request a treatment for the outside of your home. At All-American Pest Control, we call this treatment service “Perimeter PLUS.” If you’d like to learn more about Perimeter PLUS, or schedule service, go here to get started.

Protecting Historic Nashville Homes from Termites

Nashville is brimming with history and we have many historic structures here that date back to the birth of our country, like President Andrew Jackson’s home, the Hermitage, which has survived nearly two centuries and also a devastating fire. Today, the biggest threat to this historical treasure is a tiny insect known as the subterranean termite. As wood ages, it becomes more and more attractive to these wood-eating pests. For this threat, the caretakers chose the Sentricon® System with Always Active™. And they’re not the first historical site to do so.

In 1996, the Statue of Liberty was temporarily shut down due to a termite infestation. When searching for a solution, the caretakers learned of a powerful new termite elimination system called Sentricon® with Always Active™ that didn’t require any digging, trenching, or structural drilling. This system didn’t require chemical injections into the ground, either, which meant there was no need for large trucks to carry tons of chemicals onto the site. It worked. On its first yearly check-up, the Statue of Liberty was found to be termite-free, and it is termite-free to this day.

The West Wing has a similar story. In 1998, termites swarmers were discovered 30 feet from the Oval Office. That is pretty impressive when you consider how tight security is at the White House. Sentricon® with Always Active™ was used to eliminate the colony that produced them, and the White House is now free of termites.

Sentricon® with Always Active™ has been trusted to protect these and other important historical structures, national treasures like the Capitol Building and Independence Hall. So it made sense to protect the Hermitage with this powerful and ecofriendly termite solution.

While every home in Nashville isn’t a historic treasure, they are a treasure to those who own them. That’s why the experts here at All-American Pest Control chose Sentricon® with Always Active™. And, it is why the Hermitage trusts All-American Pest Control to safeguard this piece of our nation’s history.

At All-American, we always choose green pest control solutions first. So, Sentricon® with Always Active™ just made sense. If you’re looking to protect your Nashville home from destructive subterranean termites, choose Sentricon® with Always Active™.

When Does Mosquito Season End in Murfreesboro?

Mosquitoes can hatch from their eggs in a temperature of 50 degrees or more. That means we can see mosquitoes in Murfreesboro and the Greater Nashville area as late as the end of November. Though mosquitoes are most active from May to October, mosquito control can be done all year long. If you’re looking to make your yard a much nicer place to be or you want to do something that will help you protect your family from mosquito-borne diseases, it is never too late to implement the following mosquito-control ideas.

Personal Protection

The very first step is to take personal precautions.

  • Apply mosquito repellent to your skin or clothing to resist mosquitoes. Repellents with DEET work best. If you’d like a more natural solution try a repellent with oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • Avoid going out in the morning or evening when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Wear brighter colors to make it harder for mosquitoes to lock onto you.
  • If you’ll be sitting or lounging in one location in your yard, use a fan to create a breeze that will help keep mosquitoes from landing on you.

Home Protection

There are many things you can do to reduce mosquito populations and keep them out of the house.

  • Make sure all your screens are in good working condition.
  • Reduce standing water on your property. Without standing water, mosquitoes are not able to reproduce. Remove containers that hold water, fix gutters and make sure rainwater is being channeled down and away from your home, turn kiddie pools over when they’re not being used, trim tree branches to allow the sun to dry areas of your perimeter that stay damp, and apply similar strategies to keep things dry.
  • If you have a bug zapper, consider retiring in. While bug zappers are good at luring mosquito into a yard and killing male mosquitoes. They have been found to be ineffective at killing female mosquitoes, which are the ones that bite us.

Professional Protection

At All-American Pest Control, we offer Perimeter PLUS for mosquito control. This pest control service targets mosquito-resting sites and breaks the cycle of reproduction in your yard. It also comes with routine treatments to guard against over 47 of Tennessee’s most common pests. Fall is a good time to get started. While mosquito season may be winding down, our homes are about to get invaded by overwintering pests. Get your pest protection in place today by investing in Perimeter PLUS.

The Pests Invading Lebanon Pantries and How To Stop Them

It is no fun finding bugs in your food. But our food is attractive to many pests. Some pests, like Indian meal moths, drugstore beetles, and cigarette beetles love our food so much, they’re called “pantry” pests. Here are a few things you should know.

Pantry pests can be frustrating to control because it is hard, or impossible, to keep them out without some form of barrier protection around your foundation perimeter. If these insects don’t hitchhike into your home, they’re going to come in through cracks in your foundation, holes in your door and window frames, gaps around pipes, and other entry points. But these cracks, holes, and gaps can be difficult to find and seal up.

As pests explore your perimeter, you have the opportunity to eliminate them before they get into your home, but it is vital that you use the right products and apply them in a way that will be effective. If done wrong, you could trade one threat for another. Sure, you’ll kill those bugs, but you could make your pets sick and your family sick. It is best to have perimeter treatments performed by a licensed and certified pest professional who uses Integrated Pest Management methods, green pest control solutions, and EPA-approved products to solve pest problems.

Once your barrier is in place, there are a few things you can do inside your home to resist pantry pests. These will help you stop bugs that fly in through an open window or door or hitchhike into your home, stowed away in a grocery bag.

  • Put items that come in paper or cardboard inside sealed plastic containers. Glass also works well. Just make sure glass jars have a tight-fitting lid.
  • When purchasing groceries, examine packages for tiny holes, rips, or tears that would allow pests entry.
  • Check the dates on baking ingredients before you use them. Pantry pests are more likely to infest items that are past their expiration date.
  • Stock your shelf with new items to the back and old items to the front.
  • Keep your pantry and kitchen as clean as possible.
  • Dispose of your garbage regularly.
  • Inspect your pantry and seal any cracks that could allow pests to come in from wall voids.
  • Fix any leaks or weeping pipes in your home.
  • If you have an area that has high humidity, control it with a dehumidifier.

It is no fun finding bugs in your food. If you live in Lebanon, let the friendly experts here at All-American Pest Control help you keep those bugs out. We guard homes from granary weevils, drugstore beetles, Indian meal moths, merchant grain beetles, rice weevils, sawtooth beetles, cigarette beetles, and more. We can also help you stop other bugs that get into pantries, such as cockroaches and ants. Reach out to us today for assistance.

Preventing Fall Stink Bug Infestations in Old Hickory

They’re small. They’re brown. And when they get into Old Hickory homes—it stinks. They’re called brown marmorated stink bugs and they can be stinky invaders in the fall. Let’s take a look at why they get in. But, more importantly, let’s talk about some helpful things you can do to keep them out of your home.

Every fall, when temperatures drop, stink bugs leave the crop fields, where they are a significant agricultural pest, and seek warmth. In nature, they congregate on the sunny sides of rocks, trees, and other objects in nature. As temperatures drop further, they’ll hide in crevices, holes, and under the bark of trees. If they warm themselves on the sunny side of a home, it is only logical to assume that they look for crevices and holes and crawl under the “bark” of our homes, which we call siding. Understanding this can help us keep stink bugs out.

Stink Bug Prevention

  • Stink bugs will often target windows because they are warm. Make sure your screens are in good-working condition.
  • Stink bugs hang out on door frames. Inspect sliding doors for any damaged weather stripping. Examine all door frames for gaps or holes that can give entry and repair those holes.
  • Stink bugs will climb on your foundation walls. Search for chipped mortar or cracks in your foundation. If you find any, seal them with a repair kit.
  • Stink bugs will explore your exterior walls. Do a detailed inspection, especially around pipes, wire conduit, and other objects that pass through your walls. If you find gaps, cracks, or holes, use a caulking gun to fill them.
  • Stink bugs will use any entry they can find. Cover any vents with screening and protect your chimney top.

Stink Bug Reduction

If you have fewer stink bugs on your home, you’ll have fewer stink bugs trying to get in. While a pest control company can’t promise that you won’t have any pests invading your home in the fall, exterior treatments are the best way to keep your home pest-free. For Old Hickory homes, and homes throughout Middle Tennessee, All-American Pest Control offers Perimeter Plus. There is no better way to keep stink bugs (and over 47 other household pests) out of your home.

Stink bugs stink. But you don’t have to put up with them. With the trusted pest control service from the friendly professionals at All-American, you can rest assured that your home has the best pest protection possible. At All-American, you won’t get inflated promises. Just results.
