When Does Mosquito Season End in Murfreesboro?

Mosquitoes can hatch from their eggs in a temperature of 50 degrees or more. That means we can see mosquitoes in Murfreesboro and the Greater Nashville area as late as the end of November. Though mosquitoes are most active from May to October, mosquito control can be done all year long. If you’re looking to make your yard a much nicer place to be or you want to do something that will help you protect your family from mosquito-borne diseases, it is never too late to implement the following mosquito-control ideas.

Personal Protection

The very first step is to take personal precautions.

  • Apply mosquito repellent to your skin or clothing to resist mosquitoes. Repellents with DEET work best. If you’d like a more natural solution try a repellent with oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • Avoid going out in the morning or evening when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Wear brighter colors to make it harder for mosquitoes to lock onto you.
  • If you’ll be sitting or lounging in one location in your yard, use a fan to create a breeze that will help keep mosquitoes from landing on you.

Home Protection

There are many things you can do to reduce mosquito populations and keep them out of the house.

  • Make sure all your screens are in good working condition.
  • Reduce standing water on your property. Without standing water, mosquitoes are not able to reproduce. Remove containers that hold water, fix gutters and make sure rainwater is being channeled down and away from your home, turn kiddie pools over when they’re not being used, trim tree branches to allow the sun to dry areas of your perimeter that stay damp, and apply similar strategies to keep things dry.
  • If you have a bug zapper, consider retiring in. While bug zappers are good at luring mosquito into a yard and killing male mosquitoes. They have been found to be ineffective at killing female mosquitoes, which are the ones that bite us.

Professional Protection

At All-American Pest Control, we offer Perimeter PLUS for mosquito control. This pest control service targets mosquito-resting sites and breaks the cycle of reproduction in your yard. It also comes with routine treatments to guard against over 47 of Tennessee’s most common pests. Fall is a good time to get started. While mosquito season may be winding down, our homes are about to get invaded by overwintering pests. Get your pest protection in place today by investing in Perimeter PLUS.

The Pests Invading Lebanon Pantries and How To Stop Them

It is no fun finding bugs in your food. But our food is attractive to many pests. Some pests, like Indian meal moths, drugstore beetles, and cigarette beetles love our food so much, they’re called “pantry” pests. Here are a few things you should know.

Pantry pests can be frustrating to control because it is hard, or impossible, to keep them out without some form of barrier protection around your foundation perimeter. If these insects don’t hitchhike into your home, they’re going to come in through cracks in your foundation, holes in your door and window frames, gaps around pipes, and other entry points. But these cracks, holes, and gaps can be difficult to find and seal up.

As pests explore your perimeter, you have the opportunity to eliminate them before they get into your home, but it is vital that you use the right products and apply them in a way that will be effective. If done wrong, you could trade one threat for another. Sure, you’ll kill those bugs, but you could make your pets sick and your family sick. It is best to have perimeter treatments performed by a licensed and certified pest professional who uses Integrated Pest Management methods, green pest control solutions, and EPA-approved products to solve pest problems.

Once your barrier is in place, there are a few things you can do inside your home to resist pantry pests. These will help you stop bugs that fly in through an open window or door or hitchhike into your home, stowed away in a grocery bag.

  • Put items that come in paper or cardboard inside sealed plastic containers. Glass also works well. Just make sure glass jars have a tight-fitting lid.
  • When purchasing groceries, examine packages for tiny holes, rips, or tears that would allow pests entry.
  • Check the dates on baking ingredients before you use them. Pantry pests are more likely to infest items that are past their expiration date.
  • Stock your shelf with new items to the back and old items to the front.
  • Keep your pantry and kitchen as clean as possible.
  • Dispose of your garbage regularly.
  • Inspect your pantry and seal any cracks that could allow pests to come in from wall voids.
  • Fix any leaks or weeping pipes in your home.
  • If you have an area that has high humidity, control it with a dehumidifier.

It is no fun finding bugs in your food. If you live in Lebanon, let the friendly experts here at All-American Pest Control help you keep those bugs out. We guard homes from granary weevils, drugstore beetles, Indian meal moths, merchant grain beetles, rice weevils, sawtooth beetles, cigarette beetles, and more. We can also help you stop other bugs that get into pantries, such as cockroaches and ants. Reach out to us today for assistance.

Preventing Fall Stink Bug Infestations in Old Hickory

They’re small. They’re brown. And when they get into Old Hickory homes—it stinks. They’re called brown marmorated stink bugs and they can be stinky invaders in the fall. Let’s take a look at why they get in. But, more importantly, let’s talk about some helpful things you can do to keep them out of your home.

Every fall, when temperatures drop, stink bugs leave the crop fields, where they are a significant agricultural pest, and seek warmth. In nature, they congregate on the sunny sides of rocks, trees, and other objects in nature. As temperatures drop further, they’ll hide in crevices, holes, and under the bark of trees. If they warm themselves on the sunny side of a home, it is only logical to assume that they look for crevices and holes and crawl under the “bark” of our homes, which we call siding. Understanding this can help us keep stink bugs out.

Stink Bug Prevention

  • Stink bugs will often target windows because they are warm. Make sure your screens are in good-working condition.
  • Stink bugs hang out on door frames. Inspect sliding doors for any damaged weather stripping. Examine all door frames for gaps or holes that can give entry and repair those holes.
  • Stink bugs will climb on your foundation walls. Search for chipped mortar or cracks in your foundation. If you find any, seal them with a repair kit.
  • Stink bugs will explore your exterior walls. Do a detailed inspection, especially around pipes, wire conduit, and other objects that pass through your walls. If you find gaps, cracks, or holes, use a caulking gun to fill them.
  • Stink bugs will use any entry they can find. Cover any vents with screening and protect your chimney top.

Stink Bug Reduction

If you have fewer stink bugs on your home, you’ll have fewer stink bugs trying to get in. While a pest control company can’t promise that you won’t have any pests invading your home in the fall, exterior treatments are the best way to keep your home pest-free. For Old Hickory homes, and homes throughout Middle Tennessee, All-American Pest Control offers Perimeter Plus. There is no better way to keep stink bugs (and over 47 other household pests) out of your home.

Stink bugs stink. But you don’t have to put up with them. With the trusted pest control service from the friendly professionals at All-American, you can rest assured that your home has the best pest protection possible. At All-American, you won’t get inflated promises. Just results.

How Mice Break Into Middle Tennessee Homes and Businesses

The two mice we see most in our Middle Tennessee service area are the house mouse and the deer mouse. A house mouse is 5 ½ to 7 inches long from head to tail, and grey or brown in color with a light tan underside. A deer mouse is around 6 inches long from head to tail with grayish-brown fur above and white fur below. It is important to tell these two mice apart because deer mice are primarily responsible for transmitting the Hantavirus to humans, which is a growing threat in the United States. But both of these mice are vectors for human pathogens, harmful bacteria, and parasites. Here are some ways they may try to get into your Middle Tennessee property.

Gaps

If you have gaps around pipes and electrical conduit, or cracks in foundation walls, mice will exploit these holes. It doesn’t take much of a hole for a mouse to gain entry. If it finds a hole that is slightly larger than the size of its skull, it can work its way in.

Wall and Door Frames

Mice have strong incisors which they use to chew through wood. They can chew through a screen and work their way through the frame of a window. Once inside a wall void, there are many ways they may emerge into common areas.

Under Your Garage Door

If your garage door doesn’t have a complete seal, especially near the corners, mice can work their way in. It is important to make sure your door makes a good seal and that it is kept closed.

Air Vents

Mice can jump to gain entrance to air vents. It is important to keep vents covered with some form of screen material.

Rooflines and Chimney

If a mouse can get up to your roof, they can gain entry through your roofline or chimney. They will do this by using tree branches as a bridge or by climbing up downspouts. Deer mice are especially good at doing this.

If you haven’t had mice get in yet, you can find some great tips for general exclusion here and some tips here for excluding mice before they get onto your property in the fall.

As always, All-American Pest Control is available to assist you with any pest control matter you’re dealing with. For one-time or ongoing rodent control, start with a free evaluation for your home or business.

How to Get Rid of Flies in Hendersonville Homes

There are few things as disturbing as having a fly land on your food. It is even more disturbing when flies do this inside your Hendersonville home. If this is happening to you right now, we have a few ideas that will help you get on top of your fly problem.

Control Food Sources

Flies are looking for something to eat. They can eat food left on dirty dishes. They can eat fruit left on the kitchen table. And they can feed on food in your trash. Consider keeping dishes in soapy water instead of in a stack next to the sink. Keep fruit in the refrigerator till you’re ready to eat it. And keep your interior trash inside a receptacle with a tight-fitting lid. Also, consider putting organic material inside plastic bags before putting them in your trash.

Vacuum

If you have several flies pestering you, which is common with cluster flies and drain flies, a vacuum is a helpful tool to get rid of them. This works for fruit flies and fungus flies as well.

Address Breeding Sites

If you have flies breeding inside your home, it is likely that you have rotting organic matter somewhere. It is important to hunt this down. It might be an apple left behind the couch by one of your kids. It might be food left in a pet’s dish that isn’t being used anymore. It could be an animal that got into your home and died in the attic or a wall void. Whatever it is, it needs to be found and removed in order to stop the infestation.

Once You’ve Dealt With Flies Inside

  • Remove attractants around your home that are luring flies in.
  • Make sure all your screens are in good working order.
  • Inspect your foundation perimeter to make sure no wild animals have died near your home.

When Is It Time To Call A Professional?

Often, homeowners attack the symptom of a fly problem and are unable to address the source. This causes fly populations inside a home to grow out of control or results in infestations reappearing over and over again.

The solution for fly problems in Hendersonville is Perimeter Plus from All-American Pest Control. This year-round service comes with protection for over 47 common pests, including flies. If you have not yet invested in pest control for your Hendersonville home, we make it easy to learn more about it by offering a free home evaluation. Find out what’s bugging you and let the friendly, experienced pest-control professionals here at All-American help you make a plan that works for you.

Keeping Wasps Away From Hendersonville Pools

Are you familiar with the paper wasp? Each year, these insects create grey, egg-like nests on our Hendersonville homes during the spring, and grow their populations all year long. In the fall, when populations are maxed out, they become more aggressive as they prepare female reproductives to overwinter. This can make them a frustrating pest to have around, especially near pool areas which we tend to enjoy well into fall.

There are many do-it-yourself suggestions on the internet that promise to help you reduce or control wasps around your pool. But there are pitfalls to following this advice. Some of these suggestions will lead you to waste a lot of time without achieving any real results. Some can make your problem worse or expose your family to harmful chemical agents. It is best to stay away from DIY ideas.

Attractants

  • You can prevent wasps from coming into your pool area by removing or protecting attractants. Here are some examples:
  • If you have a grill near your pool, make sure you keep meats in sealed containers until you’re ready to throw them on the grill.
  • Wasps are drawn to sweets. If you bring a drink out to the pool, consider putting it in a cup with a lid and a straw. If you have a bottle of soda, keep the top screwed on when you’re not drinking from the bottle.
  • Wasps feed on aphids (meats) and nectar (sweets). Removing flowers from pool areas can reduce wasp attractants.

Wasp Removal

The best way to avoid wasps in your pool area is to not have wasp nests on your property. Wasps can establish nests in many locations, some aren’t so obvious. If you’re seeing wasps around your pool area but don’t know where they’re coming from, a professional can help you solve the mystery.

All-American Pest Control offers nest removal services for Hendersonville residents. We also provide ongoing pest control service that works to address wasps all year long. With ongoing, routine pest control, you’ll be able to relax when you’re outside enjoying your pool. Isn’t that what pools are for?

What Pest Control Do I Need for My New Nashville Home?

Pests are a year-round problem in Nashville. Common pests such as subterranean termites, ants, spiders, and stinging insects can thrive longer here than they can in other parts of the country, sometimes even right through the winter. This can lead to many issues for residents. Are you moving to Nashville? If so, here are a few pest-control problems you can expect to contend with.

Termites

No home in Middle Tennessee should be without termite protection. Subterranean termites are destructive, sneaky insects that can do serious damage to a home. And, when this damage is discovered, it is the homeowner that is left paying the bill. Unfortunately, insurance companies don’t cover termite damage.

Mosquitoes

In Nashville, you can expect to get bitten by mosquitoes. And, with mosquitoes being linked to several dangerous viruses, it is a good idea to have mosquito misting service for your new home.

Mice

These furry little pests are a serious problem in Nashville. House mice are vectors for Lymphocytic choriomeningitis, rickettsialpox, and leptospirosis, and deer mice are the primary vector for hantavirus. Every Nashville home should have proper rodent monitoring.

Biting Pests

There are many insects that can bite us in our backyards, and sometimes inside our homes. Every home should have routine treatments for fleas, ticks, fire ants, and chiggers. Some of these pests cause physical harm and some can spread human pathogens.

Stinging Insects

No matter where you live in the country, wasps and hornets are an issue. Nashville is no different. It is important to have routine inspections from a pest-control technician to have nests located and removed before these insects can become a threat.

Carpenter Ants

Like termites, carpenter ants can do a significant amount of damage to a home. Early detection is key to stopping these insects.

All-For-One Complete

The best option to protect Nashville homes is All-For-One Complete Care because it combines all of our main services together into one convenient package. Just like it says, it is complete care for your Nashville home and it is perfect for starting off on the right foot with unwanted pests. For more information on this program start right here.

Just How Harmful Are Termites in Tennessee?

When we talk about termites harming us, we’re not talking about bites or stings. You have nothing to fear from termites, as they are not known to bite people. But they do take bites out of the wood inside homes and businesses, one bite at a time, slowly nibbling away at support structures and causing cascading damage, over time, which eventually will take a bite out of our wallets.

But a termite is only about ¼ to ½ an inch in length, how much damage can it really do?

That’s right. Termites are small. An individual termite isn’t much of a threat to our property. The problem is that your property isn’t going to be attacked by an individual subterranean termite working on its own. There can be over a million individual termites in a termite colony and your property can be attacked by more than one colony at a time. Together, they can do a lot of damage, especially in Tennessee where temperature and humidity levels are ideal.

What does all that damage cost Tennessee property owners?

According to the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), subterranean termites cost U.S. property owners over $5 billion annually, and states with a warmer climate, like Tennessee, pay out more than states that stay colder throughout the year. That’s why termites in Tennessee should never be ignored. And yet, we often do just that. Out of sight out of mind, right? But don’t let this be the case for you.

Termites prefer to stay out of sight. In fact, they’re really good at it. That is one of the biggest reasons subterranean termites are so harmful. But, when you have a professional install the Sentricon® System with Always Active™, you don’t have to worry about those wood-destroying pests eluding detection. Sentricon® with Always Active™ takes the guesswork out of termite detection and elimination. It’s like investing in a termite security system for your property.

Hold on. Aren’t termites something other people get? What are the chances that I’ll have a termite problem?

Pretty good actually. In 8 out of 10 homes that we have installed Sentricon® with Always Active™ as a preventative measure, we caught termites and eliminated colonies in the first year. No Tennessee home should be without termite protection.

If you’re ready to get your termite protection in place for your Gallatin home or business, give us a call today to learn more about our termite control options.
