What You Need To Know To Keep Ants Away From Your Brentwood Property

Have you ever had the unpleasant experience of having an ant crawl over your barefoot or up your leg? The tingling sensation of having any bug crawl across your skin is enough to cause even the toughest of individuals to cringe. If you hate ants as much as most people, we have a few prevention tips you should hear about. Here is everything you need to know on how to keep ants away from your Brentwood property.

Common Ants Found Around Brentwood

Many species of ants are native to Tennessee. We have little black ants, Argentine ants, fire ants, carpenter ants, pavement ants, Pharaoh ants, and a number of others. Each species is different in appearance and each causes different problems around homes. Here is a brief description of common ants and what you can expect from them.

Argentine Ants: 1/16 to ¼ of an inch long, dark brown to black in color and shiny, these ants love building their nests around wet environments.

Little Black Ants: 1/16 of an inch long, dark brown to jet black in color, these are one of the most common ant invaders here in Brentwood.

Red Imported Fire Ants: ⅛ to ⅜ of an inch long, dark reddish-brown in color, these are capable of biting and stinging whomever they deem a threat.

Carpenter Ants: ⅝ of an inch long, red, black, or a combination of both in color, these are known for the way they construct their nests into the wood of homes.

Pavement Ants: ⅛ of an inch long, dark brown to black in color, these ants are known for building their nests around and beneath driveways, sidewalks, and roads.

Pharaoh Ants: 1/16 of an inch long, pale yellow in color, these are able to spread a number of dangerous diseases.

The Problems Ants Pose

Most ants are harmless. There are only a select few species that pose any threat to you or your home. Carpenter ants, Pharaoh ants, and fire ants, in particular, are especially troublesome.

Carpenter ants will build their nests deep into the wood of homes which slowly weakens and breaks down the home’s structural foundation. This damage can result in thousands of dollars in home repair costs if carpenter ants are given an ample amount of time.

Pharaoh ants can pick up dangerous bacteria and spread it throughout homes, contaminating food and threatening diseases such as salmonellosis and streptococcus.

Fire ants build large nests in the dry sections of yards and encroach on and destroy grass nearby. When interacted with, these pests will bite and sting, causing a fair amount of pain to whomever they attack.

How To Prevent Ants From Getting Inside

Ants are drawn to homes for a number of reasons. Here are a few prevention tips to block off ants and discourage them from entering your home.

  • Seal gaps and cracks in your home’s exterior using a caulking gun.

  • Repair or replace damaged weather stripping, ripped window/door screens, and broken door sweeps around your home.

  • Address moisture problems in and around your home.

  • Keep your grass well-trimmed and your landscaping properly maintained.

  • Store leftover food after meals inside airtight containers.

  • Make sure all of your trashcans have tight-fitting lids.

  • Pick up and clean out your pets’ water and food dishes after they are done with them.

Nashville's Comprehensive Guide To Stink Bug Control

Bugs stink, regardless, but there is one in particular that stinks a bit more than the rest. You have probably seen these shield-shaped pests before around your Nashville home. Each fall without fail they invade in large numbers and cause trouble with their pungent odor and propensity for generally being annoying. We are of course talking about stink bugs. If your home has struggled with stink bug infestations in past years, we have a comprehensive control guide that you have to hear about. Here is everything you need to know about stink bug control.

What Are Stink Bugs?

Stink bugs are agricultural pests that spend the majority of their life outside, attacking crops. These smelly bugs can be identified by their mottled grayish-brown color and shield-shaped bodies. When squished or threatened, stink bugs release a pungent odor that some describe as smelling like cilantro, and if you know anything about cilantro, it tastes a whole lot better than it smells.

Stink bugs become a problem inside as weather cools down during fall. Most often infestations start on the outside of homes as stink bugs gather on exterior walls to catch sunlight and stay warm. If a home is improperly sealed, stink bugs can find better warmth inside by invading. This is, of course, where problems begin.

Are stink bugs dangerous?

Despite assaulting noses with their pungent odor, stink bugs are not dangerous to humans or pets. They are not known for carrying dangerous diseases and they don’t have stingers. The biggest problem stink bugs cause is with just how annoying they are. If you have ever had a stink bug in your home, you know exactly what we are talking about. When they invade, they get on everything and do whatever they wish. Watching TV? They will find their way on the screen. Doing dishes? They will land on your sponge. Working out? They will buzz around your head until you go crazy.

Are stink bugs destructive?

Stink bugs have a huge hunger that can only be satisfied by eating plant life. If you have a garden or decorative plants in and around your home, they could be seriously damaged by a stink bug infestation.

How To Stop Stink Bugs From Getting Inside

Stink bugs will get into homes in a number of different ways. To keep stink bugs from finding their way into your Nashville home this fall, here are some prevention tips our experts recommend you do.

  • Thoroughly inspect the exterior of your home for gaps, cracks, and small openings where stink bugs could fit through. Seal off these potential entry points using a caulking gun or some liquid cement.

  • Check weather stripping around your home for damage or general wear and tear and repair or replace them as needed.

  • Fix torn or ripped window and door screens around your home.

  • Make sure all of your exterior doors are equipped with door sweeps.

  • Keep exterior lights turned off at night or invest in insect-resistant light bulbs.

  • Reduce moisture around your home by fixing leaks, repairing broken gutters, and using a dehumidifier as needed.

  • Make sure your home is properly ventilated.

  • Check food and other items for hitchhiking stink bugs.

If your home is already being invaded by stink bugs or you would like extra help protecting your home from being invaded this fall, we have answers for you here at All-American Pest Control. Let us find your quickest path to a stink bug-free fall.

Give us a call today with questions or to schedule an appointment for your Nashville home.

All The Ways You Attract Mosquitoes Around Hendersonville

Being attacked by mosquitoes can often feel like a coincidence. Certainly, they aren’t targeting you, right? Wrong. Mosquitoes are drawn more to certain people than others. This begs the question, what is it that makes you more attractive to mosquitoes? We will be talking a little bit about this today, along with giving you some practical ways to fight back.

What Are Mosquitoes?

Mosquitoes are tiny insects that rely on blood meals to survive. However, this does not mean their main source of food is blood. In fact, male mosquitoes don’t eat blood at all. It is only female mosquitoes that require blood for egg production. To get blood, female mosquitoes will use their sharp needle-like mouthparts to pierce skin and draw out what they need. Despite popular belief, mosquito bites don’t actually hurt, the thing that causes inflammation and pain is the anticoagulant saliva they inject into your blood to prevent it from clotting.

How Dangerous Are Mosquitoes?

At first glance, mosquitoes don’t look or seem that dangerous. Sure, they drink blood, but not enough to harm someone, right? The truth is it isn’t the amount of blood they take, but what their needle mouthparts might be tainted with. Have you ever heard of the dangers of using a needle twice? All it takes is a single drop of infected blood to spread disease. Say, for instance, a mosquito bites someone who has malaria and then someone else who is completely healthy. The second person could become infected from the remnants of the mosquito’s last meal. Some other diseases mosquitoes have been known to carry and spread include dengue fever, chikungunya, and West Nile virus.

What Do Mosquitoes Look For?

Mosquitoes aren’t the greatest flyers, nor do they have the best vision. Because of these two things, they have to get creative to find their prey. One of the ways mosquitoes find their victims is by looking for dark silhouettes against light backdrops. If you are wearing darker colored clothing, mosquitoes will be able to see you better.

Another thing mosquitoes use to hunt their prey is body heat and sweat. If you exercise outside often, you might find yourself being bitten by mosquitoes every time you stop moving. Some studies have also been done that suggest mosquitoes are more attracted to certain blood types as well as pregnant women.

The most common way mosquitoes find a bite to eat is with carbon dioxide, a gas that is exhaled by all humans. This is another reason mosquitoes are drawn to people who exercise outside as the more breathing you do, the more likely you are to draw in unwanted bloodsuckers.

How You Can Avoid Being Bitten By Mosquitoes?

The more you know about mosquitoes, the better able you will be to avoid being bitten when out and about. To simplify things, here are a few of the best prevention tips you should use when spending time outdoors.

  • Avoid going outside during dusk and dawn as this is when mosquitoes are most active.

  • Wear lighter colored clothing.

  • Be careful not to exercise in areas dense with mosquitoes.

  • Apply insect repellant to your body before going outside.

  • Invest in high-quality mosquito control for your property.

If you are looking for the best way to keep mosquitoes from buzzing onto your Hendersonville property, we have your solution here at All-American Pest Control. Using only the most effective treatments we can give your property everything it needs to minimize mosquito populations. Give us a call today to schedule an appointment for your property.

Why Can't I Get Rid Of These Fire Ants On My Murfreesboro Property?

In Brazil, there is a tribe of people called the Mawé. In their culture, it is traditional for boys to wear gloves filled with bullet ants in order to enter into manhood. Bullet ants have one of the most painful stings on the planet. Fortunately, neither these bugs nor the tradition of putting bugs on our hands to prove manliness exist here in America. What we do have, however, are fire ants. Although not nearly as painful as their southern cousins, fire ants possess painful venom and the ability to bite. This can be particularly frustrating for homeowners whose lawns have been invaded. If you are looking for a way to remove fire ants from your Murfreesboro property, we have some simple tips for you today.

What Are Fire Ants?

Fire ants are social insects that live in underground colonies. Unlike many other species of ant, fire ants can have multiple queens. These queens work together to expand colonies quickly. The only thing that limits the expanse of new nests in a fire ant colony is available food sources. By their nature, fire ants are omnivorous. This means they can eat plants or animals. Most fire ants live on a diet of other insects, earthworms, ticks, arthropod eggs, ticks, honeydew, and other sweet foods.
As their name would suggest, fire ants like it hot. For this reason, they build their nests around the sunniest and driest areas around yards. It is extremely rare to find a fire ant nest in a shaded area.

The Problems Fire Ants Cause

Although fire ants rarely enter into homes, the amount of problems they cause outdoors is quite impressive. You may already know that fire ants can both bite and sting. Walk too close to one of their nests and they will attack, leaving you hopping and shaking to get them off. If you are allergic to fire ant venom, these attacks can be potentially life-threatening. To find out your risk, consult with your doctor.

If biting and stinging people wasn’t enough, fire ants are also extremely destructive. For one, the dirt mounts they create suffocate nearby grass and kill lawns. In addition to this, fire ants have a strange love for building nests inside of electrical equipment. There have even been some cases where fire ants get into and severely damage heating and cooling units outside homes.

Finally, to top everything off, fire ants are nearly impossible to get rid of without help. The main reason for this stems from the fact that each colony has multiple queens. Typically, all you have to do to eliminate an ant infestation is kill their queen, which by itself is extremely difficult. With fire ants, even if you kill nine out of ten of their queens, the colony will still be able to bounce back. Only precise applications of the right treatments have any chance of fully eliminating a fire ant infestation.

How You Can Get Fire Ants Off Your Property

Don’t stress yourself out trying to deal with fire ant infestations on your own. Instead, save yourself some time, effort, and money by choosing professional pest control services. At All-American Pest Control, we understand how difficult fire ants are to eliminate. Because of this, we have worked long and hard to make sure our methods work every time. If your home needs high quality, guaranteed fire ant control, we have your back.

Give our team a call today to learn more about our services or to schedule a quality inspection for your Murfreesboro home and property.

Who Else Wants To Keep Beetles & Crickets Out Of Their Nashville Home?

There is no easy way to say this, but your home is a pest magnet. Don’t worry though, most homes attract pests. It doesn’t matter if you own a mansion or a tiny cabin, pests will always want to get inside. Why? Because your home is warm, sheltered from the elements, and filled with easily available food sources. Today we will be talking about two pests who are particularly annoying to deal with, beetles and crickets. Here are some strategies for you to use to keep these bugs out of your Nashville home.

Some Things You Should Know About Beetles

Beetles come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but all are equipped with a hard exoskeleton, six legs, and two antennae. Most species of beetle prefer to stay outside and feed on plants and gardens. Occasionally, however, beetles will enter into homes to seek shelter from inclement weather or unfriendly temperatures outdoors. Some beetles such as the merchant grain beetle are known for invading boxes of dried foods where they can lay their eggs. These eggs take roughly 8 days to hatch into larvae who then begin to feed the food that surrounds them. As you can imagine, pouring out a bowl of cereal and finding bugs wiggling inside of it is more than a bit disconcerting.

A Few Things You Need To Know About Crickets

Do you know that not all crickets chirp? The truth is only male crickets chirp. This is done by rubbing the edges of their forewings together. The reason they do this is to attract a mate and let us tell you, the last thing you need in your home is crickets making this annoying noise.

Just like beetles, crickets love feeding on seeds, stems, and plant life in general. When inside homes, they will look for dropped grains, left out fruit, and vegetables to munch on. Although this behavior is not dangerous in any way, it can still be disgusting to think about.

Crickets are drawn into homes for the same reason beetles are. If the weather outside is unfavorable crickets will be quick to come indoors. Once inside, they will look for ways to sustain themselves. If they cannot find a way to survive indoors they will wander around until the moment they are found or until they can find a way back outside.

How To Keep Beetles and Crickets Out Of Your Home

The good news is that beetles and crickets invade homes in the same ways. This means you can prevent both at the same time. Here are some detailed ways our experts recommend you defend your home against these pests.

  • Search your home’s exterior foundation for cracks, gaps, and holes. Fill in any entry points you find using a caulking gun.

  • Check your home’s weather stripping and replace or repair it as needed.

  • If you have not already, invest in high-quality door sweeps for all exterior doors.

  • Make sure all window and door screens are free of rips and tears.

  • Keep bushes and tree branches trimmed away from the exterior of your home.

  • Trim your grass at least once weekly and make sure your landscaping is well maintained.

  • Check indoor flowers and plants for bugs before bringing them inside.

  • Inspect boxes of dried food for holes before you put them into your cart.

For an easier solution to beetle and cricket prevention, trust the professionals here at All-American Pest Control. We know the absolute best methods for keeping pests out of homes and would be happy to share our success with you. Reach out to our team of experts today to find your home’s best solution to pests.

Nashville Property Owner's Guide To Understanding Your WDI Report

A wood-destroying organism report, also referred to as a wood-destroying insect report, is a document that outlines the threat presented to a property by carpenter ants, termites, powderpost beetles, and other insects that damage wood. At All-American Pest Control, we help home buyers and sellers by creating this report. Our licensed service professionals inspect Middle Tennessee properties for the presence of wood-destroying insects and conditions that could make a property susceptible to damage.

Why You Should Get A WDI/WDO Report

Whether you are buying or selling a home, it is smart to invest in a wood destroying insect report.

Buying — Termite damage can be prevented. But the sad reality is that some property owners don’t make termite control a priority. This can lead to extensive, hidden damage. As a property buyer, the last thing you want is to inherit hidden damage caused by wood-destroying pests. A WDI report helps you get the information you need to make a purchase you won’t regret.

Selling — Insects can cause damage that is costly to repair, and this damage is often below the surface where you can’t see it. You can live in a home for years and not realize that it has been severely damaged by insects. As a property seller, it can be a frustrating complication when a buyer discovers wood-destroying insects before you do. It could even prevent the property from being sold. A WDI report helps you correct issues before you put your property on the market, and it can allow you to recuperate any money lost making repairs before the sale.

How bad are wood-destroying insects in Nashville?

The humidity and warm temperatures in Tennessee give wood-destroying insects that they need to work like well-oiled machines. When these insects move into your yard and start damaging your home, it can be difficult to detect them. This is especially true of subterranean termites. Termites live in the ground and come up from the ground to feed on the wood of man-made structures. Once inside wood, they rarely reveal themselves. They feed quietly, hiding inside timbers, safe from the dry air and sunlight. When damage is finally discovered, it can be serious. Subterranean termites cost U.S. property owners billions of dollars every year, but you don’t have to be part of that statistic.

Carpenter ants are no slouches. They can do quite a bit of damage as well. These ants carve out galleries inside wood. They begin with decaying wood but are known to move into sound timbers. As a carpenter ant colony grows, it spreads through the structure. Once it matures, one nest can turn into several nests. Carpenter ants cost U.S. property owners hundreds of thousands of dollars in repairs annually. While not as destructive as subterranean termites on a national scale, each individual infestation varies. It is possible to have a carpenter ant infestation that is worse than termites. Don’t risk it. Get your property inspected by a licensed service professional.

Protect Your Nashville Property

The service team at All-American Pest Control is always available to answer your questions or to perform inspections and treatments. If you’d like to schedule an inspection for a WDI report, or you’d like to take your first step toward investing in ongoing, always active termite control, or perimeter pest control, we’d love to help you. Here's How To Tell If Ants Around Your Hendersonville Property Are Dangerous

We have a lot of ants in Hendersonville. Have you noticed? They create ant hills in our lawns. They create ant hills along our driveways and walkways. They scale our exterior walls. They get into our exterior trash cans. Rarely a day goes by where we don’t see ants if we take a moment to think about it. But most of the time we don’t think about it. We pay no attention to them crawling around on window sills and exploring the threshold of the doorway into the garage. We barely give them a second of our attention when we go out onto the porch or the back deck. It is only when ants start to mobilize in large numbers that we take notice. Have you noticed ants in large numbers? Have you done something in your yard or around your home that has caused hundreds of ants to come up out of the ground in defense of their colony? If you have, it is likely that you have questions. What ants are they? Will they get into your home? Can they damage your property or make you sick? Here are a few tips to help you determine whether or not those ants are a threat.

Three Ant Threats

There are three ways ants in Hendersonville can be a threat, and there are three types of ants associated with these three threats. Carpenter ants are property damaging ants that tunnel through wood. Fire ants are stinging ants that can present a hazard for babies, the elderly, the infirm, and anyone who has an allergic reaction to their venom. Pharaoh ants are a disease threat because they commonly feed on the open woods of livestock, pets, and wildlife. If any of these ants are establishing colonies in your yard or near your home, it is important that you know how to identify them.

Carpenter Ants

These ants are the largest ants that get into Hendersonville properties. But all carpenter ants are not large enough to distinctly tell them apart from other ants. Workers range in size. A single colony can have workers that are ¼ of an inch to ⅝ of an inch long. Male and female swarmers can be ⅝ to as much as an inch long. While it is certainly easy to determine that a 1-inch black ant is a carpenter ant; it is a little more difficult when the workers are a mere ¼ of an inch long. Fortunately, carpenter ants do some things that will help you identify them.

  • Carpenter ant workers will be found in areas where there is decaying wood and leaf litter.

  • Carpenter ants don’t tend to make mounds. They create holes in the ground.

  • Carpenter ants damage wood. If you’re seeing damage to the wood of your home, such as deck boards or the frames around doors and windows, the ants you’re seeing are probably carpenter ants.

Fire Ants

These ants have a red coloration. But they aren’t the only red ants that will come into your yard. If you see red ants with a dark abdomen that are about ⅛ to ⅜ of an inch long, they might be fire ants. Here are two tips to help with identification:

  • If you’ve been stung by one, you don’t have to wonder.

  • Fire ants create mounds throughout a yard.

Pharaoh Ants

These ants have pale bodies and dark abdomens that may look black. They’re only about 1/16 of an inch long, with monomorphic workers. If you see thousands of tiny ants that match this description, it is likely that you have a Pharaoh ant problem.

Do You Have An Ant Problem?

If you need assistance addressing an ant problem or you need help with identification, remember that the service team at All-American Pest Control is always available to help. We provide industry-leading ant control in the Hendersonville area. We have the experience and training to eliminate any kind of ants.

Answering Nashville's Most Commonly Asked Flea Questions

Fleas can be mysterious and incessant pests. If an infestation takes root in your Nashville home, it can plague you for months, and have you expending a lot of energy and time, only to continue to have those fleas bite you and your pets. Why? Because fleas are hard to eliminate, especially if you try to use many of the less-than-helpful tips given on the internet. Today, we’re going to take a look at a few of the questions we commonly get about fleas. Hopefully, these will help you make the right decisions when fleas take root in your Nashville home.

“How do you know if you have fleas?”

When you start to find bites on your skin, or you start to see fleas hopping around on your floors, there is no doubt that you have a flea infestation, but that isn’t the best time to discover an infestation. It is much nicer to detect them early and have them eliminated quickly. Here are a few tips:

  • Watch for signs that your pet will give you, such as scratching and restlessness.

  • If you see little specks that look like pepper, rub the specks with a paper towel. If you see blood on the paper towel, that is flea dirt.

  • Use a comb to search for fleas and flea dirt on your pet.

  • Inspect your pet’s bedding for the presence of flea dirt or adult fleas.

“What is the cause of fleas?”

Fleas hitchhike into your home on furry animals. If you have a cat or dog that goes in and out of your home, they could have brought fleas in. Fleas may also come into your home on mice, rats, squirrels, raccoons, and other wildlife.

“What does a flea bite on a human look like?”

Flea bites tend to be very itchy. If you’re being bitten by fleas, the bites are likely to be inflamed, and they may have a scab in the center. These bites will be random on the skin and are likely to be on your feet, ankles, or lower legs.

“Are fleas dangerous?”

It depends on the flea. If a flea has been exposed to a pathogen, you can become sick from a flea bite. You can also become sick from a pet that has been exposed to fleas. Be cautious about allowing your pets to lick you if they have fleas.

“Why are fleas so hard to kill?”

The reproductive cycle of fleas allows them to emerge over and over again. If you kill adult fleas in your home, new fleas can hatch from eggs or emerge from protective cocoons that are still in your home.

“Does alcohol kill fleas?” and “Will vinegar kill fleas?”

Yes. You can kill fleas with a solution that contains rubbing alcohol or vinegar. You can also kill them with many other natural products, or with soap. But none of these sprays or solutions are likely to arrest the infestation in your home because they treat the symptom, not the problem. Fleas are pernicious. They can emerge over and over again if you don’t use a residual product that eliminates them as they emerge.

“What do I do if my house has fleas?” and “How do I get rid of fleas in my house fast?”

Contact All-American Pest Control at the first sign of a problem. Our service team members use EPA approved products that have a residual effect. After your treatment, you’ll have months of protection. You’ll also be given helpful information on how to prevent flea infestations in the future. There is no better way to deal with fleas. Contact us today to request service.

What Nashville Property Owners Ought To Know About Brown Recluse Spider Treatments

All spiders have fangs, and all spiders have venom, but there are only two spiders in the United States that are considered to be a serious medical threat. You can probably name them. They are both infamous. Today, we’re going to forego talking about black widow spiders and focus our attention on the spider that is most often called a brown recluse, though it has many names. You might call them violin spiders, fiddleback spiders, or just plain old brown spiders. When these spiders appear in your Nashville home, it is likely that you will want them out, at all costs. They have the potential to cause a serious wound. Here’s how our service team members work to get control of this pest threat.

Inspection

The first step is to determine the level of infestation. Your service professional will look for areas that are conducive to brown recluse activity, check for webs, and track down other evidence. From this inspection, a treatment plan will be developed.

Treatments

There are many treatment options for eliminating brown recluse spiders inside your home. One of the most common is an application of dust inside wall voids to eliminate the spiders hiding in voids. This requires moving furniture around and taking wall plates off, but don’t worry, your service professional will put those items back after the treatment.

Monitoring

Brown recluse control is a process. It doesn’t happen overnight. Your service professional will apply glue boards in strategic locations to monitor brown recluse activity and ensure that the treatments are getting the job done.

Perimeter Protection

When addressing a brown recluse infestation, it is important to treat the outside of your home. Perimeter treatments work to keep new spiders from coming in and replacing the spiders that are eliminated, and it helps to prevent future infestations from taking root. Your perimeter is the most important area for pest control. This area includes your exterior walls, foundation walls, landscaping, garage door seal, voids underneath structures, etc. When your perimeter is properly treated with EPA approved products, those treatments will work to repel and eliminate pests before they get into your home. Our Brown Recluse Spider Reduction plans cover over 47 different pests, not just spiders. Why? Because one of the best ways to reduce brown recluse spiders is to remove the food they eat, which are all of those insects crawling around the outside of your Nashville home.

Spider Bite Prevention

As we work to eliminate spiders in your home and prevent more spiders from getting in, we help you prevent bites by offering guidance in brown recluse spider bite prevention.

  • Keep clothing off the floor.

  • Remove skirts from beds.

  • Make sure bedding doesn’t touch the floor.

  • Remove clutter from rooms.

  • Vacuum under furniture regularly.

  • Shake shoes and clothing before wearing them.

  • Carefully inspect items taken out of storage.

  • Don’t miss any of your scheduled appointments for service.

If you are bitten, apply ice to the bite wound and seek medical attention. Brown recluse spider bites often have an ulcer or blister in the center. This will help you recognize them if you didn’t see the spider when it bit you.

Again, keep in mind that brown recluse spider reduction is an ongoing service of constant pest protection. It isn’t a quick fix. Anyone who tells you that it is should not be trusted.
