Where Do Termites Go During The Winter?

Just like all insects, winter can affect how active termites are. Insects are cold-blooded animals that speed up when it is warm and slow down when it is cold. Some insects even have behavioral patterns that cause them to seal up their nests or dig deeper into the ground to get below the frost line. This is sometimes the case with termites. But it is not always the case.

Termites do not hibernate. If given warm temperatures all year long, termites will continue to remain active. But, even when temperatures get cold, termites can still find the right circumstances to stay active.

Subterranean termites live in the ground. If a nest is deep under the ground, it will be unaffected by the cold weather. It is estimated that a typical subterranean termite can be as far as 18-20 feet below the surface. In our service area, that is deep enough to easily avoid the cold, but is it enough to stop termites from feeding on our homes?

Homes that have crawl spaces or dirt basements are more susceptible to having year-round termite feeding. This is because termites can get to the wood of these homes without going up the outside wall, where it is much colder. But they are not limited to only damaging these types of homes. If they build mud tubes in a location that is sheltered from the cold winter air, or they find a location of a home that touches the soil, they may have the conditions they need to be active all winter long.

In our Hendersonville service area, winters can be mild, with little or no snow, or they can be bitter cold with lots of snow. It depends on the year. Termites will notice bitter cold with less snow but a layer of snow and warmer temperatures can actually work to insulate mud tubes and give termites the protection they need to use those tunnels in winter.

For these reasons, it is best to have year-round termite monitoring and control in the Hendersonville area.
